What is a jumpsuit?

A jumpsuit is a one-piece garment: the top and trousers are a single item of clothing. The name comes from the coveralls worn by parachutists in the 1910s—hence “jump suit.” What began as workwear and sportswear became a fashion garment in the 1970s, and the style has reappeared in almost every decade since.

The big advantage: you don’t have to put anything together. One grab, one piece, a finished outfit. That’s exactly why jumpsuits are so popular for travel and festivals.

Jumpsuit, coveralls or dungarees: What’s the difference?

The terms are often used interchangeably in everyday language. Here’s how to tell them apart:

1. Jumpsuit: a closed one-piece garment with a top, usually with sleeves or straps. It fits closely around the upper body.
2. Coveralls: originally workwear, cut more loosely and often featuring a full-length front fastening. Today, the term is used almost synonymously with jumpsuit.
3. Dungarees: trousers with a bib and two straps, open at the top. You wear a shirt underneath.

In practical terms: with a jumpsuit, you’re fully dressed, while dungarees require an additional top. On the other hand, dungarees are more breathable and easier to adapt to changing temperatures.

Linen, cotton or hemp?

With a one-piece garment, the fabric lies against a large area of your body—so the material has a greater impact on comfort than with almost any other item of clothing.

1. Linen is the coolest fiber. It wrinkles heavily, but that’s part of linen’s character. Ideal for hot days.
2. Cotton is softer and easier to care for, but it also provides a little more warmth. The all-rounder.

What you should avoid: polyester. A synthetic one-piece can quickly become uncomfortable on a summer day because the air has nowhere to circulate.

How do you style a jumpsuit?

Because the jumpsuit is already the entire outfit, styling is only about adding accents. Three rules that reliably work:

1. Define the waist. A belt or tied scarf breaks up the silhouette—without one, a loose one-piece can quickly look like a sack.
2. Add a layer on top. A poncho, kimono or open shirt breaks up the expanse of fabric and helps with changing temperatures.
3. Shoes determine the look. Hemp shoes make it casual, while sturdier shoes make the same jumpsuit more suitable for everyday wear.

As always, the rule for patterned styles is: one statement is enough. Keep everything else understated.

Jumpsuits for men

Boho-style dungarees

Dungarees are the more breathable relative of the jumpsuit. They originated as agricultural workwear, were adopted by the hippie movement in the 1960s and have never completely disappeared since.

In the boho style, they differ significantly from classic denim dungarees: looser cuts, natural fibers instead of denim, and earth tones or woven patterns instead of blue. Linen dungarees are among the coolest garments you can wear in summer because they are open at the top, allowing air to circulate.

What to look for when buying: adjustable straps, a bib that doesn’t fasten too high, and pockets large enough for your hand.

The honest drawback

One point hardly anyone mentions: when you need to use the toilet, you have to take off the entire one-piece garment. At a multi-day festival with portable toilets, that’s a genuine consideration.

That’s why our tip is: choose a style you can open quickly, and when in doubt, opt for dungarees instead of a closed jumpsuit. They can be undone in just two steps.
